Soft-Boiled Eggs in a Tea Kettle
This recipe started as an experiment to see if you could cook eggs in a tea kettle and I’m happy to say you can! Aside from college students who want an egg with their instant noodles, this recipe is ideal for people who want one egg without having to boil a whole pot of water (or maybe if you want hot water for tea and a boiled egg at the same time).
Tips
- Make sure to use 3 cups of water. Any other amount, and the eggs might cook at a different rate.
- This recipe was only intended for one egg and using more eggs might lead to them being undercooked, but feel free to experiment!
- If you want hard-boiled eggs, 8 minutes was perfect for me.
- Sprinkle with your favorite seasonings, put on top of noodles or rice, or enjoy as-is!

3 cups water
1 egg, preferably room temperature
Ice water bath
Directions
- Fill the tea kettle with 3 cups of water and put in the egg. Make sure it’s fully covered by the water.
- Start the kettle and once the water boils, turn off the kettle and set a timer for 6 minutes. Keep the eggs in the kettle until the time is up. Prep an ice water bath with ice cubes and water while the egg is cooking.
- After the time is up, immediately put the egg in the ice water bath to stop the cooking.
- Peel the egg once it’s cool enough to handle and enjoy!

Notes
- Peeling eggs in water can help remove the shell (the water gets under the membrane) without losing bits of egg white.
